Mitsui Plastics

High-Performance Tackifiers for Demanding Applications

Mitsui Plastics offers a line of high-performance C5 and C5/C9 hydrocarbon tackifier resins engineered to deliver superior adhesion and broad polymer compatibility. Produced from highly purified C5 and C9 monomers, these resins exhibit excellent thermal stability, low odor, and customizable properties ideal for pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs), sealants, coatings, and more. With a balanced aliphatic/aromatic composition giving medium polarity, our tackifiers are compatible with a wide range of base polymers (e.g. SIS, SBS, EVA, natural rubber) and perform reliably even in demanding industrial and consumer applications.

Key Benefits & Advantages

  • High Purity & Stable Quality
Manufactured from highly purified raw monomers, our resins exhibit excellent heat stability and batch-to-batch consistency. Production in tightly controlled facilities ensures low odor, low volatility, and reliable performance even at elevated temperatures.
  • Versatile Compatibility
These tackifiers are broadly compatible with a wide range of base polymers – from styrenic block copolymers (SIS, SBS) to polyolefins (EVA) and natural rubber. They serve as ideal tackifiers in PSAs, hot-melt adhesives, sealants, tire rubber compounds, traffic paints, and more.
  • Customizable Performance
Available in numerous grades (including standard aliphatic, aromatic-modified C5/C9, low-odor/light-color, and acid-modified versions), our resins allow formulators to tailor adhesive properties – adjusting tackiness, peel strength, softening point, viscosity, and compatibility.
  • Proven Track Record
Backed by over five decades of production experience and 80,000 MT/year capacity, our has a long history of successful use in industry. This proven reliability gives customers confidence in consistent quality, supported by a global supplier recognized as one of the world’s top producers of C5-based tackifying resins.

Major Applications & Markets

  • Pressure-Sensitive Adhesive Tapes & Labels
C5/C9 Resins are widely used as the primary tackifier in PSA formulations for packaging tapes, adhesive labels, and decals. It provides aggressive initial tack and long-lasting adhesion.
  • Hygiene & Personal Care Adhesives
Hot-melt adhesives in diapers, sanitary products, and other hygiene items often incorporate C5 resins to achieve the required balance of tack and cohesion.
  • Packaging & Assembly Hot-Melts
Many case and carton sealing adhesives use C5/C9 resins as a tackifier to improve adhesion to cardboard and plastics. DX-series grades offer improved thermal stability for these applications.
  • Automotive & Rubber Compounding
C5/C9 resins find use in specialty adhesives and rubber compounding as tackifiers. Small dosages improve tackiness of uncured rubber without affecting cured properties.
  • Industrial Coatings & Sealants
Our resin’s balanced polarity and adhesive boosting effect improve the performance of sealants and coatings, including road marking paints and asphalt modification.
  • Other Uses
Our tackifiers are also found in consumer goods assembly adhesives, bookbinding glues, specialty pressure-sensitive products, and more.

Role in Adhesive Formulations

Component Typical Content (wt%) Function in Adhesive
SIS Polymer 20–40% Backbone elastomer providing base strength and elasticity
Tackifier Resin 25–60% Imparts tack and improves adhesion to substrates
Plasticizers (oil/wax) 5–25% Enhance flexibility and wetting; lower viscosity
Additives (antioxidants etc.) <5% Protect adhesive from degradation

Tackifier resins typically make up 25–60% of the adhesive by weight, functioning as the sticky component. They boost tack and peel strength while maintaining shear holding power and heat resistance.
